A Professional Development Video: Talking to parents about their child’s, speech, language and communication

The Communication Trust, in partnership with Afasic have developed a video to support practitioners working with children and young people with how to raise initial concerns about a child or young person’s speech, language and communication development with their parents. The video is intended to be used as a professional development resource, to enhance confidence and skills in talking with parents about their child’s speech, language and communication development and skills.

The video is suitable for anyone working with children and young people across all different phases and is completely free to access.

There are three main sections within the video: Preparation (02:46-8:33), During the conversation (08:34-18:56) and Next steps (18:57-26:12).

After each section there is a prompt for reflection, or discussion if you’re watching the video as a group. We have developed a checklist to help you plan and prepare for this conversation as well as reflection/ discussion questions.

Once you’ve watched the video, we would really appreciate if you could please share your feedback via a short survey as it will help us to understand if the video has had an impact on your knowledge, understanding and confidence in talking to parents about their child's speech, language and communication needs.
