Why should I read Communicating Phonics?
The phonics checklist, also known as the phonics test or phonics screen, was launche din June 2012 and is administered to all Year 1 children each June. The Department for Education issued statutory guidance about the check which also signposts to further information about administering the check from the Standards and Testing Agency. You can access the guidance on The Department for Education web pages here.
There are, however, implications for many children with special educational needs (SEN) and particularly those with SLCN.
Results from the phonics check have highlighted that for many children with SLCN it is challenging. 32% of pupils with SLCN achieved the required standard, compared to 76% of pupils who don't have special educational needs.
This guide, put together with the expertise of nearly 50 of specialist organisations, will support teachers in delivering the test but also in overall literacy development of children with SLCN. The guide was produced in 2012 and is one of our most popular resources.
"As an adviser, it has been a valuable tool to take to schools to help them think about the literacy development of children with SLCN"
"Improved access to the test for some children and additional resources very useful"
"... this resource has opened up discussions on literacy issues with teachers about children I am working with and we have shared our knowledge/observations which hopefully has led to better support for the children - using knowledge from teacher and SLT to support their literacy."
Don't forget, the guide isn't just about the phonics check. You will find lots of information and guidance to support the literacy development of children with SLCN beyond the check itself.
