Overcoming Barriers - a workforce briefing

How was this resource developed?

In 2016 we asked more than 1,200 members of the children and young people’s workforce about their experiences, needs and the barriers that are preventing them from accessing professional development in speech, language and communication. The survey revealed a number of consistent barriers including cost, staff time, and access to relevant opportunities.

Learning around speech, language and communication not only strengthens the skills and confidence of individual practitioners but strengthens the workforce as a collective and, crucially, has a positive impact on the speech, language and communication development of the children and young people they work with and ultimately their longer term outcomes which are underpinned by these vital skills.

Overcoming Barries increases the impact of this report, by providing specific, practical information for practitioners in different sectors about overcoming some of the barriers to professional development in speech, language and communication.
